Class 9 English Lesson 14 Note
#Unit -14 History and Civilization
Look at the picture and talk about human evolution.
👉 The image provided illustrates the various phases of human development from antiquity to the present. Anatomically, it is thought that Homo heidelbergensis, the ancestor of modern humans, first appeared in Africa around 300,000 years ago. As they migrated out of Africa, they gradually displaced the local populations of archaic humans. All humans have historically lived as nomadic hunters and gatherers. Agriculture and permanent human settlement came into being during the Neolithic Revolution, which started in Southwest Asia around 13,000 years ago (and separately in a few other locations). Forms of governance emerged within and between communities as populations grew larger and denser, and numerous civilizations rose and fell.

This happened not only one or two times but six times. At the sixth time, the enemies chased the king out of the nearby forest too. The king saved his life by hiding inside a cave far away. Now, the king had no hope of getting his kingdom back and he was sad and depressed. When the king was inside the cave, he saw a spider trying to climb the wall. The spider tried for the sixth time but failed. Only on the seventh time, the spider succeeded. Watching this, the king got motivated. He thought, “If an insect like a spider doesn’t lose hope and tries again and again to achieve success, then why should a human like me lose hope so early?” Then, the king organized his army, trained and motivated them well, attacked his enemies, and finally, defeated them to regain his kingdom in the seventh attempt.

This happened to me when I was in India. I used to go to my office by train. On this particular evening, I hurried to my station but when I reached there the train had already gone. I bought a newspaper and a packet of biscuits and sat on the bench. While I was reading, a man came and sat down opposite me. There was nothing special about him, except that he was very tall. I was still reading when my eyes caught a very strange sight. The man reached over the table, opened my pack of biscuits, took one, dipped it into his coffee and popped it into his mouth. I couldn’t believe my eyes. But I didn’t want to make a fuss, so I ignored it. I just took a biscuit myself and went back to the newspaper. While I was pretending to be very interested in the news, the man took a second biscuit. After a couple of minutes, I casually put a biscuit in my mouth and decided to leave. I was ready to go when the man stood up and hurriedly left. I folded my newspaper and stood up. And there on the table, where my newspaper had been, was my pack of biscuits.

This subject guides us to learn about our past. There are lots of benefits to studying History. The study of history provides us with knowledge about human life in the past, our ancestors and their activities, our traditional cultures, people’s lifestyle, their way of practice, and so on related to the past. Studying history allows us to observe and understand how people and societies behaved in the past. For example, we are able to evaluate war, even when a nation is at peace, by looking back at previous events. History develops in us a deep understanding of the world along with the changes it has undergone with time. If we study History, we understand different aspects of life. We come to know what pillars our culture was built only by studying History subject. Finding who we are and what we can do for the world is a huge part of our childhood question. Thus, allowing children to study History is one way to help them know something about ancestors and get inspired by their valours and good deeds. There is a highly famous quote by George Santayana that says, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” and I agree with this. The past is always filled with warning signs and invaluable lessons. This is the major reason why History is a respected academic pursuit that challenges us. Not only this, but History also helps us to understand present-day issues by giving similar examples from the past. If we want to know why or how something happened in any field, we need to look into its origins. History helps us become better-informed citizens in many aspects of life. By getting knowledge of History, we can change our old belief systems, which are impractical at the present time and adapt those which are fruitful to us and our society. By having knowledge of history, we can not only know the weaknesses and mistakes of our past but also use this knowledge and experience in order to make our future better. Therefore, the study of history is very important to us
